FAQ’s

What is a physical therapist?
A physical therapist is a licensed health care practitioner that helps individuals of all ages to restore movement and function after suffering from disabilities associated with pain, weakness, imbalance and loss of coordination.

What kind of treatment will I expect?
Physical therapy involves the use of appropriate passive and active techniques and exercises that are individually designed depending on your impairment. Specific manual therapy techniques can also be applied to your joint and muscle problem. Modalities such as ice, heat, therapeutic ultrasound, electric stimulation, low level laser, etc. may be used in conjunction with your exercises to help decrease your pain and/or promote healing to soft tissues. Along with exercises, you will be given recommendations to prevent future injuries that may result from your current physical condition.

Do I need to see a doctor before starting physical therapy?
New York state has direct access, meaning you can go to a physical therapist without a prescription from a doctor. This is allowed for the first 10 treatment sessions or 30 days, whichever comes first. Should you need further therapy, you will then need to call your doctor to get a prescription.

What do I expect on my first visit?
Your initial visit is usually an hour long – a comprehensive evaluation will be performed by a physical therapist. You will be asked questions regarding your health, work and social status, as it affects your condition. Certain physical tests will be performed and may elicit pain or discomfort, which usually subsides within 24 hours.

How many times do I need to come?
The nature of your injury at the time of your evaluation will determine the number of visits and duration of treatment. Most patients are seen between 1 – 3 times a week.

Do I have a choice where to go for physical therapy?
Absolutely. You are not obliged to go to a physical therapy office affiliated with your doctor. You can go to any facility that you are most comfortable with.  Remember that some physical therapy care require a specialist so it is best to always ask the facility where you plan to go if there is a therapist that specializes in your problem.

Can I afford to pay for physical therapy?
Most insurance companies provide physical therapy benefits and you may be responsible for a co-insurance or co-pay which is required to be paid every visit. Medicare, private insurances, no fault and work compensation all pay for physical therapy. If you have no insurance, we will be glad to provide you with an affordable payment plan so you can get started with your therapy.
